Chong Mek - Tourist Visa Extension

Extending your tourist visa in Ubon Ratchathani via Chong Mek


In case you are in the Ubon Ratchathani area and you need to extend your multiple entry visa, you can go to the border station in Chong Mek, located to the east of the city of Ubon Ratchathani. Road signs in English will lead you to the border station or you can just follow Route 217. It takes about 1.5 hours going from Ubon Ratchathani to Chong Mek by car. Below you can find a walkthrough for the complete procedure.

Going to Laos after arriving in Chong Mek

  1. Fill out your depature card
  2. Enter the border station on the left through the pedestrian entrance and hand over your passport and the departure card to the Thai officer, they will keep the departure card
  3. Walk through the short tunnel to the Laotian side
  4. Get your passport checked at the small guard station right after the tunnel
  5. Go to the main building located on the right of the main street after approx. 150 m
  6. Go to the 'Visa on arrival' windows and hand over your passport
  7. Fill out the arrival/departure card and the visa application from, that you should receive from the officer
  8. Hand over your passport, the filled out visa application form and the arrival/departure card to the officer
  9. Depending on your home country you will be asked to pay a fine between $30-$42, you can pay this fine in Thai baht
  10. You will receive your passport with the Laotian visa
  11. Time to go shopping on the small market to the left of the main street :)

 Leaving Laos

  1. Go to the main building to the depature section
  2. Hand over your passport and the departure card
  3. Go to the small guard station and show the officers your passport
  4. Walk through the tunnel to the Thai side
  5. Fill out the arrival/departure card 
  6. Hand over your passport and the arrival card to the officer
  7. You should receive your passport back with the new date on your multiple entry visa
  8. You're done, time to eat
